Construction began on the new Panama City - Bay County International Airport in January 2008. It is the first airport built in the U.S. since 9/11, and in fact, the first new U.S. airport in more than 15 years.

The eyes of the world are now on Bay County as this state-of-the-art transportation marvel gets set to open on Memorial Day 2010.  With integrated and adjacent industrial sites on 4,000 acres of airport property, a 10,000-foot runway, nearby deepwater port and rail service and an extensive, easily accessible highway system, the region is poised to take advantage of an intermodal opportunity many areas of the country can only dream about.

The new airport is part of a 75,000-acre area called the West Bay Area Sector Plan, a massive, 50- to 100-year planning effort that ensures development around the airport will be complementary, not contradictory. West of the airport will be a regional employment center for industries that want to locate next to an airport. The employment center has approximately 3,000 acres set aside for development with initial plans for three million square feet of commercial development. The business center has approximately 850 acres set aside with initial plans for 750,000 square feet of commercial development. To the south, airport-related businesses such as rental car outlets and hotels will be clustered.  The area east of the airport is designated for office buildings. Economic Development Alliances are working hard to ensure new jobs and improved air service arrive on schedule in 2010.

Protecting the environment is a major part of the plan as well.  The sector plan calls for nearly 41,000 acres of conservation lands which will protect watersheds that feed into the St. Andrews Bay system, by creating conservation buffers along the rivers and creeks– some as wide as 1,000 feet – more than 30 times the amount required by law.  This ensures 33 miles of West Bay shoreline and 44 miles of creek and tributaries will be protected forever.
